Calendar Next session starts Nov 14, 2019 at 5 pm

America in Stone and Steel is a multimedia presentation that focuses on monuments and memorials around the world and investigates their current meaning - often in contrast with their original intent.  They are examined both as important works of public art, as well as strong cultural statements.  Behind the scenes stories illuminate such icons as the Statue of Liberty, the Lincoln Memorial and the pyramids of Egypt.

Charles Tampio moved to Tucson after 25 years in Washington, D.C. where he held a variety of jobs in education and environmental nonprofits.  He was President of Earthforce and vice president of the Close Up Foundation and is currently president of the charitable Levelor Foundation.  He is a docent at the Tucson Museum of Art and has given record setting presentations in Tucson and all over the country.   Among his other accomplishments - he was the first anchor for C-SPAN.

Talks in this series are free for TCA members and an $8 donation is suggested for general public attendance.

with Susan Hill

Calendar Next session starts Jan 9, 2020 at 5 pm

As a woman Mary Elizabeth Jane Colter was original, complex, creative and unconventional. Her architecture exhibits those qualities as well; it was an expression of her personality and her passion. Andrew Berke, one of her biographers, says it well: The story of Mary Colter, is compelling. It is a one-of-a-kind tale of talent and tenacity, played out against a backdrop of flourishing opportunity in a rugged region--telling of an exceptional person who pioneered both as an architect and as a woman. In this talk, Susan will talk about the buildings at the south rim of the Grand Canyon, but also about some of Mary Colters hotels - El Navajo and especially La Posada in Winslow, AZ.
